SPACE BUTTONS, BADGES, PATCHES, AND PINS ARTIFACTS

Patches, badges, and pins represent the spirit of an endeavor. From the art of ancient armory and heraldry, generations past have created logos to capture in symbolic form the meaning of a mission. Study of each manned mission patch provides a rich understanding of the nature of each space mission. A study of "armory" quickly reveals that certain animals are chosen to represent virtues. It is no accident that the initial manned lunar landing patch features the symbol of the United States of America, a bald eagle.
