Received bachelor of aeronautical engineering degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology (1959).

NASA EXPERIENCE:
Was selected for the MOL program in 1965, and transferred to the NASA astronaut group in 1969. He was a member of the astronaut support crew for Skylab 2, 3, and 4; and the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project; and was assigned to space shuttle development. He was a member of one of the two shuttle approach and landing test crews and was the pilot on the STS-2 flight, and commander for STS-8. Admiral Truly was commander of Naval Space Command before becoming the current Administrator of NASA (1991).
